Meal planning with ADHD: decide the week's food in one go

A week of food is 25 meals and snacks to decide, one at a time, often when you're already hungry. Make those decisions once, keep the plan where you'll see it, and shop from one list. Here is a real week, counted.

    Key takeaways

    • Make every food decision for the week in one sitting, on the same day each week. Then no meal waits on a choice.
    • A real week for one person holds 25 meals and snacks. They come from 9 recipes and one shop-bought snack, because breakfasts and lunches repeat.
    • Cook extra and eat it later. In the same week you cook dinner on 5 nights and eat leftovers on 2.
    • Shop from one list, sorted by aisle. This week's Tesco list has 30 items to buy, and 23 cupboard items you might already have.
    • If your ADHD medicine takes your appetite, ask your prescriber. The NHS lists loss of appetite as a common side effect of methylphenidate.

Meal planning with ADHD comes down to one sitting a week. In it, you decide every meal, plan which dinners make leftovers and write one shopping list. After that, you follow the plan. This post counts what one real week asks you to decide. Susten planned the week on 26 October 2026, for one person at 2,000 kcal a day.

Why food takes so much planning

Food asks for three things every day: choose a meal, have what it needs in, then cook it. Each one leans on planning and memory. The NHS lists these among the symptoms of ADHD in adults:

    • being easily distracted or forgetful
    • finding it hard to organise your time
    • finding it hard to follow instructions or finish tasks

The NHS also advises adults with ADHD to aim for a healthy, balanced diet and regular mealtimes. A plan helps with both, because each mealtime's food is chosen before the day starts.

What one week asks you to decide

Here is what a week of food holds for one person, counted from a real week:

    meals and snacks
    25
    recipes
    9
    nights you cook dinner
    5
    items to buy
    30

Without a plan, each of those 25 meals and snacks is its own decision. You make it at mealtime, when you're hungry and the fridge may not have what you need. With a plan, you make the same decisions once, at a time you choose.

    1. Decide every meal in one sitting

Pick one day and one time each week, and plan the whole week then. Start with dinner, then fill breakfast and lunch.

Repeat what you can. A breakfast you eat four days running is one decision, not four. So is a lunch you like. As a result, this week uses 9 recipes for 25 meals and snacks, plus one shop-bought snack.

    2. Cook less often: plan your leftovers

When you cook double, the second portion is a later meal with nothing to decide and nothing to cook. In this week you cook dinner on 5 nights. On the other 2, dinner is a portion you cooked the night before, and some lunches are too.

Next, match the dinners to your nights. Put the quickest on the nights you have least time or energy, and the longest on a night you're in early:

    3. Shop from one list, in aisle order

Write the list from the plan, not from memory. Go through each recipe, add up every ingredient across the week, and round up to whole packs. Then sort the list by aisle, so you walk the shop once or fill an online basket in one go. Finally, cross off what you already have.

For this week, the list has 53 items. Of those, 30 are to buy and 23 are cupboard items you might already have.

At those prices, the items to buy come to £38.92 at Tesco, or £38.17 with Clubcard prices.

    4. Keep the plan where you'll see it

A plan only works if you see it at mealtime. For children with ADHD, the NHS lists support at home such as writing a to-do list and putting it somewhere easy to see. A meal plan works the same way: put it on the fridge, or keep it on your phone's home screen.

Then set two reminders: one for your planning time each week, and one for the shop.

When your medicine takes your appetite

The NHS lists loss of appetite as a common side effect of methylphenidate for adults, which means it happens in more than 1 in 100 people. The NHS says:

    • It may help to take methylphenidate with a meal.
    • For stomach ache, it can help to eat and drink slowly and have smaller, more frequent meals.
    • If you're losing a lot of weight, speak to your doctor.

A plan can hold the meals your prescriber suggests. For example, a breakfast you take your medicine with is one more meal decided in advance. Ask your GP or prescriber before you change when or how you eat around your medicine.

    Make next week easier

Keep a list of the meals you liked and start next week's plan from it. In addition, keep the same planning day and time each week. To compare the apps that plan a week for you, see meal planning apps in the UK, compared.
